Color can play a big part in the success of a design. When I work on an illustration, I often create a specific color palette that comes from extensive research. Marrying the right color scheme with graphic elements helps set the visual tone of the final piece and can go a long way to making sure a design has an authentic feel.

Go Speed Go
Speed Racer was the first cartoon I ever watched. As a child the cartoon fascinated me and I have been a big fan of it all my life and yes, I actually loved the recent big screen live action adaptation of the cartoon. The bright bold color scheme really helped sell the visual eye candy. This color swatch was taken directly from stills from the film and it has found it’s way into a lot of my recent work including this site.

Atomic Kitchen
This color swatch was taken directly from paint swatch books from the 1950’s. I have relied on these swatches often whenever I have created work that needed to have a “retro” look and feel.

OceanCity 1974
This color swatch was sampled from some old photographs from my family’s summer vacation to Ocean City, NJ. The boardwalk was filled with great examples of color and typography. I can still feel the slight sea breeze blowing off the ocean at dusk and smell the air that was filled with saltwater and cotton candy.

Fields Of Concrete
This is a color palette that I often use when I need an urban look and feel to a project. The colors are muted and are taken from rust and concrete. I have found that these color work well with a bright strong accent color that helps to unify the tone and keeps the colors from washing into a
sea of neutrality.
